It’s practically a home Eurovision for Denmark this year,
with Copenhagen just a short train ride away over the Oresund Bridge from
Malmö. Emmelie will be able to stay at home if she wants to. She had to travel
halfway across Denmark for the final held in Herning, in the middle of nowhere.
What a show it was though, with most of the songs worthy of a place in a
Eurovision final (and most better than many that will actually be there). It
was a hotly fought battle then, but Emmelie emerged triumphant. She’s a waif of
a thing, with a song reminiscent of Florence & The Machine with a Celtic
tinge. And it’s good, very good in fact; it’s easily one of the favourites. One
of the songwriters has Danish Eurovision pedigree, having penned the 2011 entry
New Tomorrow (which finished 3rd) and one of my all-time favourites
Fra Mols Til Skagen that achieved 5th place in 1995. This could
match those results or do even better. There’s drums and whistles and even a
digital emulation of that golden-shower effect which I’d lay money on them
using for real on the night. With current exchange rates two consecutive
Scandinavian Eurovisions may bankrupt us, but it’s looking like a distinct
possibility.
My score: 10 points
